Day six, ALCOVE spring

Although George Donner was elected captain of the party, the whole idea of it was James REED‘s. Went in late May 1846. The big blue river was swollen over, the party had to wait five days for the waters to receive, during which they stayed at ALCOVE spring. I have to admit, it was quite a trek down a dirt and gravel road, and then a hike, tough at times for me with my cane and pitbull, to get to the spring while RED was there, he carved his name and dates into a rock in a very visible location. Three days later, his mother-in-law died, and she was buried, not too far away beneath an Elm tree. This was the first of the many tragedies that would be set this fated party.
